A Quick Q&A with Mark Di Vincenzo, Business Writers Group's president:
Q: Why not do your own writing?
A: Because it can cost you a lot of money, not to mention your reputation.
Q: How so?
A:
· Dull press releases go straight into newsroom trashcans.
· Resumes and cover letters with typos and misspellings don't get read twice.
· Wordy, unexciting business plans don't lead to loans or buy-out offers.
· Murky project proposals will get you a “Thanks, but no thanks.”
Q: How do you know?
A: I've seen it happen with...
…Press releases and cover letters and resumes: I
worked in a newsroom for 24 years. The people who decide whether to
write about your business are extremely busy, and if the first sentence
of your press release bores them, they won't read the second sentence.
For six and a half of those 24 years, I worked as an editor and played a
large role in hiring. Anyone who sent a cover letter or resume with a
typo didn't get invited to interview.
…Brochures: A wealth management firm nearly lost a
client who was appalled by the wordy and error-filled marketing
brochure she received. The client lost confidence in a firm that didn't
take the time to carefully proof its brochure.
…Business plans: I know a couple who want to
expand their business. They are very busy people, but they insisted on
writing their own business plan. They still haven't finished it – more
than a year later – and they missed out on low-interest loans that would
have saved them a lot of money.
…Project proposals: A government contractor,
which happens to employ a friend of mine, has been told it lost jobs it
bid for because its proposals were unclear and wordy.
Q: I'm not a lousy writer. I can write well enough.
A: Well enough isn't always good
enough. Writing and editing, like speaking a foreign language or
playing a sport or a musical instrument, is a skill that must be
practiced, or it will quickly erode.
